Mrs. Marie Bennett Rankin, 94, of 612 North Mulberry Street, passed away at the Gordon Hospice House on Saturday, October 27, 2018, following an extended illness. She was born in Alexander County on May 19, 1924, and was the daughter of the late David and Etta Mae Keaton Bennett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Charles Elbert "CJ" James; five brothers, Wilbur Bennett, Garland Bennett, Harry Bennett, Henry “Bill” Bennett and Dearcy Bennett and a sister-in-law, Idell Bennett.
She was a graduate of Happy Plains High School and was a member of Third Creek Baptist Church in Stony Point. She moved from Statesville to Philadelphia in 1957 and worked with the Defense Supply Center, a federal government service for fourteen years and retired in 1987. She ranked high in the VFW #8837, Women’s Auxiliary and the MOC Auxiliary. Marie loved good food and had been known to sneak some candy between breakfast and lunch. She was famous for her dishes of potato salad and sweet potato pies of which she made for many people and events. Following her returned to North Carolina, she reunited with Third Creek Baptist Church and she also attended Clark’s Chapel Baptist Church with her daughter.
She leaves to remember and celebrate her life, her daughter, Jo Ann Rankin James of the home; two granddaughters, Dena (Chris) Lowe & Janell Heath, both of Mebane; four great grandchildren, Jermaine Heath, Jadon Heath, Jordon Heath, all of Philadelphia, Pa. and Chris Lowe, III of Mebane; a sister-in-law, Ophelia Bennett and Betty Bennett, both of Stony Point; her caretaker, Geraldine (Jerry) Grimes of Troutman, two goddaughters, Jessie Lyles and Barbara Tillman, both of Philadelphia, Pa.; three special friends, Evangelist Aleen Alexander, Bertha Hamilton and Beula Mack; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, other relatives and friends.
Special Thanks to Arnetha Jones, Renee Ijames, James Parker, Jr., Freddie Morrison and Rev. Leslie Morrison.
