Obituary for Geneva Sephonia Blackwell (Brown)

Mama, Grand-mama, Mama Gen, Sister, Friend, Aunt Gen, Aunt Gen-Gen,
Aunt Sophie, Auntie, Mother Blackwell, …“Child of God”
But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31

Mother Geneva Sephronia Brown Chambers Blackwell, 77, was born to the late Bishop Verlon M. and Mother Ocie Mae Dowdy Brown on September 20, 1941, with the assistance of the late Mrs. Viola Long. She was born the 6th child of 13 children, and was the namesake of her paternal grandmother, the late Mother Sephronia Adams-Brown. She entered into eternal life on Monday, January 14, 2019. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Otis Thomas Chambers; two children, Otis Alexander and Sally Carr; a grandchild, Tyesha Chambers; and five siblings, Blonnett Brown Daye, Nathaniel Brown, Douglas Brown, King Edward Verlon Brown and Mae Nell Lackey.

September 20, 1941 was a Saturday—The Sabbath. It was the 263rd day, the 38th Saturday when Geneva Sephronia Brown was born! The time of her birth is not known, but it is safe to assume that it was a blessed birth on the Holy Sabbath day. The Love of God and the 7th Day Sabbath was instilled in Mother Blackwell from her youth up, and until her end she strived to please the Lord! As a lifetime member of Bibleway Church Headquarters, she proved to be a Faithful Saint and a devoted and dedicated member. She served under the leadership of the church founder, the late Bishop JG Simenton, the late Mother EJ Rowe, Elder PN Torrence, the late Bishop HJ Daniels, and the current leader, Overseer GA Daniels.

Mother Blackwell, who was known to be a quiet but strong presence, was an intelligent woman, who had a witty sense of humor that had the ultimate and clever goal of spreading love and joy to all. She was a 1959 graduate of Morningside High School, a 1975 graduate of Mitchell Community College, and she attended Gardner Webb University from 1979-1981, pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Education. In 1993 she returned to Mitchell Community College and earned her CNA certification, and began working for Home Health Services for several years. She was also employed as a Teacher Assistant at NB Mills Elementary School for a number of years, and this was one of the highlights of her career. Her personality, faith, joy, and her love for God and people was never compromised. She never had a ‘woe-it’s-me’ attitude, and she never complained. Her humor was amazing, and she could say some of the funniest things. Mother Blackwell was a poet by trade, and by respect of the poetic community. Her poetic diary, which she is the sole author, is entitled “POEMS from the Heart.” She obtained honorable mention and further honor for one of her poems entitled “ALONE,” and this poem was published in the National Poetic Conference Journal. “TRIALS,” is another one of her cherished poems. In her latter years, she joined the 55 & Alive group, where she continued to thrive and enjoy her life.

She was a lifetime member of Bibleway Church Headquarters, where she served faithfully in various capacities. She was a proud member of the Mothers Board, and the coordinator of Pastoral month celebrations. Formerly, served as the church secretary, Convocation Clerk, a Sabbath School Teacher, and a member of the Graduation Recognition committee. She helped to found the body-wide Founder’s Day Program. She was one of the original Jubilee Gospel Singers, and she lead a song entitled ‘In His Service.’

Mother Blackwell leaves to cherish the memory of her life, one son, Thomas (Fredia) Chambers of Harmony, NC; four daughters, Mary Alexander, Alisa (Charles) Kimbrough, Tandra (Timothy) Hargers, and Anissa Chambers, all of Statesville, NC; her siblings, one sister, Vera (LJ) Flowers, of Statesville, NC, Albertus Matthew (Loretta) Brown of Corona, NY, David Brown of Statesville, NC, Samuel (Stephanie) Brown of Snellville, Ga., Donald Brown and A. Tate, and Frankie Ivey, all of Statesville, NC; a special niece, Sheila Wasson of Statesville, NC; her grandchildren, Tonisha (Johnathan) Daniels, Leslie (Jermaine) Spears, Anthony (Patrice) Chambers, Tyrece Chambers, Toccara Chambers, Chazz Chambers, Brenton Woods, Trevin Hargers, Jabrel Chambers, Caleb Chambers, Genae Chambers, Marilyn Leach, Lanita (Keonne) Transou, Tenika Watts, Shania Chambers, Jennifer Compton, Tamarra Chambers, Tempestt Chambers, LaTorya (Derick) Blackwell, LaShawna Thompson, LaKeya (Jerome) Steele, and LaSheka Thompson; a host of great-grandchildren, Jalen Chambers, Jakobe Chambers, Khalil Spears, Imani (Isaiah) High, Raheem Spears, Jaheem Spears, Tashina Spears, Jason Geter, Jaqualyn Chambers, Jenniya Chambers, Anthony Chambers, Jr., James Chambers, Jr., Chazun Chambers, Samiyah Chambers, Trey Chambers, Journi Bennett, Malik Blackwell, Davin Clark, Kase Blackwell, Maury Blackwell, Vashti Chambers, Bryleigh Thompson, Aasiane Leach, Siyane Leach, Amiya Transou, Sallei Transou, Teaghan Transou, Denarau Transou; one great-great grandchild, Karter Spears; several young ladies who she affectionately called “my-girls,” Tosha Corpening, Beverly Stewart, Katrina Rankins, Wanda Carr and Clarissa Hood-Wesson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, Bibleway Church Headquarters family and the Bibleway Church body, neighbors and dear friends.
