Paul Jerome Rivers, age 43, of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, January 12, 2019. Paul was born on March 21, 1975 in Statesville, North Carolina, to Gilbert Rivers, Sr., and Vera Jean O’Hara Rivers, who preceded him in death.
In his early years he attended public schools in Statesville, North Carolina. He was selected to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. He graduated in 1993 with a concentration in vocal studies.
Paul discovered his love and passion for singing at an early age. He studied vocals privately with Dan Pardue at the University of Alabama and JoAnn Alexander at Mars Hill. Paul continued his studies at UNC at Greensboro where he was selected to be a member of the All-State Chorus.
Paul was the consummate vocalist. Before he entered high school, he scored a Superior at the NATS competition at Lenoir-Rhyne College. During his high school years, he continued his vocal acumen by scoring a Superior at the NATS competition at Appalachian State and at the NATS competition at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Paul attended Appalachian State University for two years where he majored in music. He then entered the work force at Pratt Industry. After twelve years of faithful service, he was forced to retire due to a disability.
Paul was widely acclaimed for his vocal skills which included, being a vocal soloist for “The Seven Last Words of Christ” by Dubois at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Statesville and repeating this performance at AME Zion in Statesville. He was a featured soloist in the Statesville area for weddings, funerals and church socials.
Paul had a special love for video games and love competition and was proud when he beat anyone who challenged him at the games. His other hobbies included going to concerts, listening to classical music, and associating with close friends and family.
Paul will always be remembered as a wonderful son and brother and for his love of sharing his God-given talent with others. Paul is survived by his brothers, Gilbert Rivers, Jr., (Sylvia), James Edward Rivers (Vickie), and Mitchell David Rivers (Tonya), his aunt, Mary Thomas, and special relative, Gloria Brewington, and a host of nephews, a niece, cousins, and many, many friends.
