Vivian Gray was born in Harmony North Carolina on March 27th, 1934 to the late Ada I. Gray and Luther Turner-Gaither. Vivian was a graduate of Unity High School. On the morning of March 9, 2019, she was called from labor to reward.

In 1952 Vivian was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Ray J. Imes. She was employed by AMPRO Electric Company until her retirement. She was a faithful member of St. John’s Baptist Church for over forty-five years where she served on the Albert L. Jackson Choir and was a founding member of the Senior Warrior Committee. She was also a member of Piney Grove A.M.E.Z Church in Harmony, NC.
She was preceded in death by sons Freklus-Wing Imes, Johnny Ray Imes, Alfred James Imes and Ronald Lee Johnson. Brothers and sisters Robert Gray, John Henry Gray, J-Will Gray, Junior Lee Gray, Hugh Gaither, Elbert Gaither, Mary Gray Gaither, Carrie Gray, Louise Gray James, Hazel Mae Gray Davis, Pauline Gaither, Beulah Gaither and Lorene Gaither. One granddaughter Latasha McClelland and one Great-Great Granddaughter Ja’Kya Jones.
She is survived by daughters Nelda Imes, Alfreda (George) Redmond, Catina (Christopher) Imes and Cynthia Baxter. God-Daughters Wanda Barker, Tanya Gittens. One special son, Apostle Duval Witter. Grandchildren Kawon Imes, Kamesha Imes, Rameek Howell, Markus Imes, Shaniel Imes, Duval (Kerry Ann) Imes-Witter and Christina Hill. Great Grandchildren Anitra Mcclelland, Nyeshia Mcclelland; Storm Imes, Damesha Imes, Omari Montgomery, Josiah Dunkley, Bless Imes, Faith Imes, Tyrone Howell, Jr. Gershom Witter, Christian Imes, Akeon McClelland and Keshaun McClelland. Great-Great Grandchildren Royalty and A’monai Steele. She also leaves behind special cousin Stamey Holland and god sister Louise Morrison. Special Nieces, Teresa Gaither, Alma Reid, Mary Ann Parsons, Edith Dobbins and Teresa Minter. Special nephews Corey “Powerful”(Vanessa) Brown Ricky Morris and Andre Baxter and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends. Special Sister-friends Henrietta Wise, Betty King, Joyce Knox, Inez Cole, Dr. Dorothy Simmons and Ms. Esther.
To know Vivian was simply to love her. Vivian had an unmatched class and grace unique only to her. Vivian loved to cook, spend time with her family, friends and loved ones. She had a special love for her church, her Pastor and 1st Lady (Dr. J.D. Williams/Lady Janice Williams) she will be sorely missed. In her own words she would say “TO GOD BE THE GLORY, PRAISE THE LORD FOR FULL SALVATION FOR I KNOW HIS BLOOD STILL REACHES DEEPER THAN AND THE STAIN HAS GONE.”

Cerebration of Life Services will be conducted Monday, March 18, 2019, at Piney Grove AME Zion Church in Harmony, Presiding Elder David Baker will officiate and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Mrs. Imes will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, 603 South Center Street, Statesville, NC until taken to the church to lie in state at 2:00 p.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
