Mrs. Ella Mae Scott Gray of 216 W. Sharpe Street, Statesville, was born in Royston Georgia, on February 9, 1921, and was the daughter of the late Hubert Lee Scott and Gwendolyn McWhorter Scott. She departed this life on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Accordius Health in Statesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuel R. Gray, a son, William Leon “Buddy “ Gray, and two sons-in law, Larry H. Morrison and Lloyd Smith, a brother, James (Sonny) Scott, and two sisters, Jamie Scott Jones and Reverend Willie Lee Scott Franklin.
She attended Unity School and Morningside School. Ella Mae served on the Usher Board for more than 65 years, and also she served on the Stewardess Board at Holsey Memorial where she was a lifelong member. She loved yard work and shopping with her sisters. Ella Mae will truly be missed.
She leaves to cherish the memory of her life one son, John (Minnie) Gray; three daughters, Elizabeth Ann (William) Keaton, Jeannette Gray Morrison and Mary Gray Smith; one "special" nephew, James "Butch" Scott; one brother, Theo “Babe” Scott of New York; one sister, Alma Gene Williams; two goddaughters, Louise (Hubert) Bellamy, and Elizabeth (Peco) Williams; one daughter in law, Janice McClain Gray of Statesville; eight grandchildren, Jan Morrison, Tracy (Robert) Shirley, Vincent Gray, Kelly (Monica) Gray, Michelle Baker, Markeatha Murphy ,Tonia Smith, Deopatha (Ronald) Bowden, Barbie Gray and Courtney (Shelton) Forney; twelve great grandchildren, DaQuanye' Moore, Ty Murphy, Amory Bowden, Khamoni Smith, Jordan Murphy, Brooklynn Smith, Andrew (Chyli) Hall, Michael Hall, Brianna Hall, Brandon Gray, Kacey Gray and Nikkole Gray, Kevin Baker, Darrian (Victor) Pedro, Colby Baker, Brandon Gray, Blake Roberts, Nadia Weatherford, Lydia Weatherford and Alex Carpenter; one great great grandchild, Chase Gray; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of Life services will be conducted on Friday, May 10, 2019, at Holsey Memorial CME Church, Statesville. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m., but will assemble at the residence of 216 W. Sharpe Street, Statesville at all other times.
