Mrs. Mary Francis Thomas Smith, 58, was born in Queens County, New York on May 30, 1960, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret Roseboro Thomas. She peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 24, 2019, at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem following an extended illness. She was married to James Edward Smith, who survives. In addition to her parents, a sister, Diane Marie Thomas and a grandmother, Maggie Roseboro, a grandfather, Mose Lee Roseboro also preceded her in death.

She was a graduate of Beach Channel High School of Queens, New York and prior to moving to Statesville she was a member of St. John Baptist Church in Far Rockaway, New York. While in New York she was employed by Key Foods for over seventeen years. She moved to Statesville on July 8, 1994, and started attending Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. She was a butcher and was employed by Tyson Foods for over forty years.
In addition to her husband, James Edward Smith of the home; she leaves to cherish the memory of her life her mother-in-law, Juliett Hutchinson of Statesville; three daughters, Cherri Shaurice Smith, Renee’ Mozel Smith and Jasmine Simone Smith, all of Statesville; six brothers, James W. “Jimmy” Roseboro of Statesville, Edward “Butchie” Thomas of Manhatten, New York, Wallace Thomas of Far Rockaway, New York, John Allen “Chubby” Thomas of Salisbury, Irvin Thomas and Tony Thomas, both of Far Rockaway, New York; a brother-in-law, Raymond (Darcelle) Smith of Durham; four grandchildren, Deleon Andonte’ (Jessica) Watts, Jr., Makayel Jahzi Smith-Jackson, Mozel “Pootie” Smith and Jhalil Ahmere Clark, all of Statesville; an aunt, Hazel E. Rosby of Statesville; a host of cousins including, Janice Jordan, Ruthie Jordan and Shelia Roseboro; and a host other relatives and friends.
