Mr. Anthony Dwayne Turman, 56, of 114 May Drive, was born in Iredell County on August 25, 1962, and was the son of the late Freckless Gibbs, Jr. and Patsy Louise Turman. He departed this life on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Iredell Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Isabell Gibbs and Ella Mae Houston;
"Pee Wee," as he was affectionately called, was a 1980 graduate of Statesville High School and was an Eagle Scout. He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged. He attended Mitchell College and North Carolina A & T University. After college, he worked for a police agency in community relations and as an instructor. He worked as a professional mediator and was co-owner of Triton Security Company. He was a member of the Statesville Branch of the NAACP and served as its President from 2015-2016, and was a member of the Ernest Morgan American Legion Post #217.
He leaves to cherish the memory of his life, one brother, Bryon Turman of Greensboro; one sister, Carmen (Ahmad) Turman Towens of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Aisa Turman of Greensboro; nieces and nephews, Kendall Marie Blake of Greensboro, Kyayla Turman of New York and Elijah Turman of Greensboro; two uncles, Michael (Faye) Houston of Statesville and John (Janie) Turman of Durham; aunts, Gwen Turman of Statesville and Ursaline Turman of Maryland; and a host of cousins, other relatives, the Mt. Pleasant Church Family, neighbors and friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Sunday, August 11, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at The Mary B. Bigham Memorial Chapel of Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. Members of the family will assemble at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the Celebration of Life Service.
